Where is FreeCell in Windows 8?
Since the very first copy of Windows, there have been some default games that came with each copy of Windows. Games like Solitaire, Minesweeper, and eventually FreeCell. But Windows 8 doesn’t come with any games. Even if you upgrade your computer from Windows 7, the default Windows games are removed. Does Windows 8 provide any free games?
Yes, there are games you can get with Windows, but they don’t come preinstalled. You need to go and get them yourself. I imagine this was done to help companies that want to block the installing of games on their systems.
To get FreeCell, go to the Start Screen and type ‘FreeCell’, and then click on Store icon. One of the results should be the “Microsoft Solitaire Collection”. Download this “app” and you’ll see that it contains five single player card games and one of them is FreeCell. The other games are: Solitaire, Klondike, Spider Solitaire, TriPeaks and Pyramid.

I started playing pretty regularly around ’98-’99.
The Windows Solitaire Collection automatically chooses your next move. I hate this! I like to play freecell on my own merits- not watch the computer play it for me. How can I reset the settings so that it will allow me to choose each move?

It’s far far far less user friendly. So many problems that slow you down, I can’t even play it.

Also like old Freecell with a new Windows 8.1 box, not there. Is now, created a directory in Programs x86 named Freecell. Copied freecell.exe and cards.dll from my XP box into this directory, put a shortcut on the desktop. Double clicked on it, works perfectly. Just like on XP. Score counts and preferences all work.

It is called Program Files (x86) and is in the C: drive.
Great Solution Works perfectly. Best I have found on the internet. Now I just need to figure out how to get rid of the miserable app that was installed from the original solution. Best wishes
Well for start you cant restart a game you are playing….
You can hold down Ctrl+Z just like you could in Vista and 7.
I just tried Ctrl-Z and it is Undo. I am at an impasse in my freecell game, so I just want to leave that game and start a new one, but I can’t figure out how to do it. Even when I shut down my computer, when I come back to freecell, it’s right back where I left it. There’s no way to win the game I’m playing, but it also won’t let me quit.

I never had to hold down Ctrl+Z to restart the game in Vista and didn’t know I COULD do that. So how would I know I could do that in Windows 8? Also, I hate the victory animations. A waste of time.
Hi Elaine…..I totally agree,….The animations all through the ‘NEW’ GAME (Start new game and win or lose) are crap…….even screen display is very poor (not sharp)….. follow further comments below from me…….
The FreeCell in the “Microsoft Solitaire Collection” really isn’t as user friendly as the old one from Win7 and its predecessors. One thing the “Microsoft Solitaire Collection” version does not have is game numbering (and therefore no game selection). I really miss this because, since 1995, I have been working up through the games from number 1. I’ve tried re-using the old freecell.exe and cards.dll from Win7 but Win8 won’t let me register the DLL. I’ve spent hours trawling the Web for solutions and just can’t find one that works. This experience has really coloured my opinion of Windows 8 and the people who designed and packaged it.
In settings you can select Game Options and enter the game number you want to play.

I had a Excel file to keep track of the games and how many tries to win. Unfortunately when my computer got sick I lost a number of files and this was one of them. I recently started playing again with any game that came up and was able to win 100%.
LOL I’m glad I’m not the only OCD person out there. I was also playing from #1 and was pretty high. it bores me to have no goal and the PC just chooses the game. No reason to play anymore.

Yes, I also couldn’t solve this number. I also have a file where I note all numbers and if I have solved them. About 98% I solved. I keep my old XP Computer for the Freecell game!

How can you find out what suit a card is when it is under other cards in Windows 8 Freecell? Example, in Windows 7, you could right click on an ace and find out what suit it is. This does not work in W 8, so you may want the ace of hearts and get the diamond

Have we, as experienced and older players of this mind-challenging game, become victims of the internet and therefore must PAY for what was once free entertainment (even though the game/s came at an inclusive price of our PC ?)……and therefore are now delivered (via ‘FREE APPS’) a totally crap experience of what was once a very good sharp and responsive computer based game ????? What we see now is circa 1993……AND we as well have the most ANNOYING (bottom-screen add) that CAN NOT be turned off ….Cheers and good luck bloggers

I’ve also been playing the game for years and played in sequence only after I won a game. I feel like throwing a tantrum–I WANT MY OLD FREE CELL BACK!!!
I’m also a Freecell adict. I’ve been playing Freecell since at least 1997 or 8 working up from game #1 to game 42024 with 9 games not playable (by me – yet). I hated the animated version in Windows Vista so I ported the old version over from my XP machine. Now I just bought a new laptop and could not get one with Windows 7 – was forced to get Windows 8 (damn Microsoft!) which I absolutely hate. The Freecell in W-8 is even worse than the one in W-Vista — Ugh!
I tried copying freecell.exe and cards.dll from my old W98 (later NT, now W-2000) desktop PC into Program files (x86) as suggested above and it works fine but won’t go above game #32000. I will have to see if I can resurrect my W-Vista machine (it has a broken display) and do it from there. I think that will probably work

Given that it’s tied to your Xbox profile I wouldn’t know. If there’s a way to reset your game stats of an Xbox game I think that would be how.

In Settings->Game Options, enter the game number you want and hit ‘play’.
When you have freecell on your screen, right click and a “new deal” option will appear on the lower right corner.

The previous versions of Windows have numbered games of freecell. I started with game #1 and want to continue where I left off. Do the games in Windows use the same numbers?
The game numbers are seeds for the random number generator that “shuffles” the deck. I don’t know if the random number generation algorithm is the same for WinRT as it is for Win32.
I’ve never ever hated Microsoft so much as I do at the moment! What have you done with Freecell, you bunch of troglodytes? Why change something that was fairly good? What are your explanation for this utter crap? It’s bad, bad, bad and bad beyond belief! I want my freecell back, now!

I am going from windows 7 x32 to windows 8 x64. I tried the following with no success.
Put both files (cards.dll and frecell.exe) in the map \Windows\Program files (x86) and it will do the job.
Is it because I am going from an x32 to an x64, and if so is there any fix.

Who can get to someone at Microsoft and get an answer about the sorry Free Cell on Windows 8. I ditto all the dissatisfied remarks above: whoever designed Windows 8 to be used on a deskop PC was coming out of a bad nightmare.
Swipe from right to left when you have Freecell started. Then choose the second option and there you can put in the game number.
Right off the bat you lost me. You say to go the Start screen. How the hell do you get to the start screen?
You press the Windows Key. It’s on your keyboard, usually on the left side between the ctrl key and the alt key. Been there for decades. Or you can swipe down from the upper corner and hit the windows icon. Or you can move your mouse to the bottom left corner of the screen and click.
In order to have the same old FreeCell on windows 8, from your win XP, right click on FreeCell shortcut then property then find target , which probably will get you to “system32” folder,copy “freecell.exe and cards.exe” ,put them in a folder on windows 8 and done!!

I have got this far and the screen comes up saying that I own this app. Problem is that I can’t see a ‘start’ button or find it in any of the hot spots. ASll my other apps work fine. only had windows 8 for 10 days.
Somebody would have had to have gone out of their way to disable the hotcorners. Perhaps you installed a third party app which did so.
There’s always the Windows Key to the left of the space bar. I’ve been using that since Vista and have only rarely used the Windows button on the screen since then.
Hate,hate windows 8. Had freecell now I don’t. Followed instructions on how to retrieve it but,when it came to step 5 (windows feature on/off) it said click on games. games are not listed .Does anyone know what to do now? Or is there another way?
Games being a Windows feature is part of Windows Vista and 7, not 8.
Wow–I thought I was the only Freecell addict. I’ve had the same laptop with XP for the past 11-12 years, and I lost track how many thousands of games I had played. That and Spider Solitaire. I’ve never played any other version. I just got this brand new laptop with Windows 8 and was just going to follow jader3rd advice and download the Microsoft version. Can I get the XP version from somewhere else?
This is the only way to get the Microsoft version of FreeCell. I know there are other FreeCell games in the Marketplace if you want to try those out.
If you open a freecell game in Windows 8 and press F5, you can enter a game no. of your choice.
Good comments. I have just upgraded to 8.1 and there are lots of alterations from users suggestions. I got up to game 9657 and when I got my new computer was sad that I could not continue. However Rick Maybury of the Sat Telegraph has a way of downloading the old freecell and installing on W8. See his col July 20
need to come up with a simple way of installing the original freecell on 8.the old windows games that are available for 8 are not nearly like the games we played on xp,vista etc.
I wish Microsoft would listen to the customer. Its bad enough having to put up with 8 but lose my freecell? I think its a plot by Apple to get us to change and it may work. I never thought I would say that I missed my “Vista”. It was poo but it had the old freecell.
Microsoft did listen to the customers. They brought in many people, and did studies, and saw how people were using computers, and how they changed behaviors between XP, Vista and 7, and made changes for all.
True, there’s a loud minority of people who don’t like the changes, but the vast majority don’t mind and might actually kind of like the Win 8 more than previous versions of Windows, but it’s not enough to go and shout out about it. But the people who really are mad shout loudly.
Microsoft just wants the money. It’s all about the money.
Freecell isn’t nearly as user friendly in any Windows 8 version as it was with XP. The primary reason I don’t like it is that you cannot choose the game that you want to play.
The primary reason I do not like Windows 7 and 8 is that the operating system takes too much control of my PC and makes me do things the way Microsoft wants me to do them, and not the way I want to do them. My next PC will definitely be an Apple.
Microsoft is a company. The purpose of a company is to make money.
If you’re talking about picking a game number, you can do that in Settings -> Game options.
Apple has always been way more about controlling the end user experience than Microsoft has been or will be. Windows is just one ingredient into the recipe that’s your computer. The OEM is responsible for how all of the different ingredients go together in the product they are selling to you.
Microsoft are in trouble. They don’t care about long term customers. They underestimate how taking away freecell, office starter, the convenient program selector at the bottom left, etc. ping people off.
Some people will like W8 particularly if they were brought up with touch screen phones. The rest of us will only be missed when profits start to fall.

It’s mostly about selling us something . I can’t down load free cell without downloading 3 or 4 others and all the advertisements , trying to get me to up grade. It gets worse all the time . It’s not worth it . The withdraws have gotten less now , so I’m sure there are other more productive things I can do .
I don’t recall ever seeing an add unless I do one of the daily challenges. Given that the daily challenges requires connecting to a service (which somebody has to pay for) it doesn’t seem that unfair to see an add to do that. But if you never do a Daily Challenge and only play FreeCell (and perhaps see how you rank against your friends) you’ll never see an ad.
The few games that were included in Windows 7 are no longer available, bummer. I loved playing FreeCell and Solitaire. In addition Windows 8 does not support Zune. It was so easy to navigate with Zune, pictures, music etc.. Now I don’t know what program or if the even is one that will do the same thing as Zune, move info, pictures and music from computer to phone and phone to computer. In addition no one with Microsoft and/or Windows can tell me what program is comparable with Zune or if there is any program with Windows 8. I am getting really frustrated and don’t like giving up anything. .
I have had no issues running Zune on my 8\8.1 computers. Nothing is stopping you from having the same Zune experience on Windows 8, that you had with previous versions of Windows.
Bought a new laptop with Win 8. Windows store does not work. Neither the store Icon or finding it with browser search. Just gives blank white screen now or messages about server connection time out, etc

Is a Microsoft Account required in order to install the Microsoft Solitaire Collection? There is no option to skip that step in the Create a new account screen.
There are ways to not have a Microsoft Account for Windows 8. They do make it kind of difficult as part of the Windows 8 to 8.1 upgrade, but it is doable. I don’t know what it’s like doing a fresh 8.1 install though. I currently run all of my systems with a non-Microsoft Account that’s the local administrator, that I never sign in as. Everyone else who signs into one my computers signs in with their own Microsoft Account, and all of those are standard users.
But even if you do sign in as a local user, you can’t access the Microsoft/Windows Store without a Microsoft Account. Plus when you start the Microsoft Solitaire Collection, it will sign into Xbox games, and associate your playing with you gamer tag.
The W8 version of Freecell sucks! And if W8 is so good why is MS working on bringing out a new version that is much more similar to 7? Personally I can’t wait, W8 might be a computer techie’s dream but it’s not designed for the average person who is a mouse and keyboard user.

I think that only works if you already have the Freecell files and other game files on your computer. Classic Shell isnt supplying those files, only letting you access them if you have them.

I remember when Vista came out my brother was really grateful that FreeCell got updated, because he had people telling him that FreeCell wasn’t as fun as Solitaire because the XP Solitaire had an ending animation and the FreeCell did not.
I just used this link to download the Free-cell game. The game has the help and easily goes from number to number for game selection. My statics of course have now started at zero, but that is actually OK for me now that I am more experienced with the game. They should improve! The game is loaded in the German language and that’s OK as well. Everything is in the same place.
A bit OT, but can do you have a link for Minesweeper as well? I have loaded the XP Solitaire directly from the maker of the game – if anyone interested –solitairexp.com.
I, like others started playing from game 1 in Free cell and wanted to continue all the way. I was thrilled to see the old Free cell, with normal sized cards.

Downloaded both files to ‘downloads’ and moved them to ‘system32’. Dbl clk on freecell gives a msg: CARDS.dll needed,reinstall. Since cards.dll is there I’m stumped. Created a new folder (freecell) under System32 and put both files there. Same msg. Any suggestions?
My problem with W8 and its version of Freecell and other solitaire games is in order to download and play them I have to give MS my e-mail address. I wouldn’t give the designers of some of the most un-user friendly software known to mankind and the largest crook and blackmailer in modern civilization, Bill Gates, my e-mail address if my life dependent on it! For starters read their very carefully worded, in their favor, disclaimer very carefully.

I hate the new Free Cell and what passes for Spider Solitaire. Everything is written for the techie, nothing for those of us who love Windows XP and don’t want to change. Every time I click something on this new computer, some screen comes up telling me I need to upgrade something. I just bought it…why do I need to upgrade anything?

I found Free Cell and Spider Solitaire in Windows 8 under Xbox games. They want you to register, but I said no, so they let me in anyhow. Don’t understand it, but there is a way you can put in the number for the Free Cell game. I think it’s under Menu, but not sure. I’ve been trying to win that pesky 11982 but haven’t yet. You can go back and undo all your moves until you win. I’m not interested in the other stuff…Klondike and I can’t remember what all.

I had no idea it was the MS store. I am clueless on a computer and if you know a way to download the ‘old’ Free Cell, I will be anxious to hear about it. I don’t like the new one, but it’s better than nothing. Much prefer the old style.

I think that removing the freecell program that was on windows 7 is a big mistake. I have been playing freecell for years and like the fact that you can play the games in sequence. This is the only reason I have stuck with Microsoft from the first platform 3.1. You can be sure that my next computer will be an Apple. They are far superior to a Microsoft computer but I was willing to suffer this just to have FREECELL. GOOD BY MICROSOFT, you have lost a customer.
My big beef with Freecell now is that my game scores no longer increment! I have tried uninstalling the App and then reinstalling it, but it just alternates between me having played one game. and no games. Has anyone else had this bug on Win 8, and does anyone know how to get round it?
That is a legitimate beef. Was this a computer that had Windows 8, and then you upgraded to 8.1? I’ve had issues with the upgrading screwing up permissions, and the issue could be permissions related. Yeah, I did upgrade to 8.1, but ages ago – well before I started using the app. It worked fine for about 130 or so games, and then I noticed it was just not incrementing. I cleared the stats and then it started to alternate between one and zero games played. That’s when I deleted the app. Rebooted. Reinstalled. No change. Now I always have 100%! Showing on zero or one games. Might try the Microsoft forum as you suggest.

I have just bought a new computer with Windows 8.1. I was devastated to discover that the free games of freecell, solitaire and mahjong are no longer included. I tried the freecell app and it is DREADFUL. No thanks! I tried copying the freecell game from my Windows 7 computer but I cannot get it to run on Windows 8.1. I have now installed Ubuntu Linux on my new computer and it has good free games of freecell, solitaire and mahjong. I use Ubuntu nearly all the time now. Windows 8.1 is a step backwards – a really bad mistake, Microsoft!

jader3rd, thanks for a great platform for us to ‘vent’ on. What really got to me was that I just bought my wife a new laptop with win 7 64 bit. I picked it because I knew people were upset with 8 and 8.1 games. My laptop is 7 and has games. To my surprise her new one did not have games. (I know games were pulled from 8 and 8.1 because of corporation pressure, not wanting employees playing games). So i got onto Microsoft site and opened a chat session with them to ask about win 7 not having the games. The store employees all said just download the games from Microsoft. BUT – in chat I was told that all of the xp and early win 7 games were in fact on my new computer, but the files were hidden. They then told me to go to control panel and turn on the games by putting an x in the games box (a couple of steps) and WOW there they were. So all the time they were taking up space and had I followed the sales peoples advise I would have taken up space to possibly download inferior quality games. I have been with computers since 1962, so if anyone wants a copy of win 3.1 on 3.1 and a half inch disks, I’m your man. Also excel and word almost all versions. This is my main use of my Windows 8 desktop. I upgraded from 7 to 8 on my laptop and of course what I had (freecell) was taken away from me. So I paid to have something removed ??

Just go to http://www.classicshell.net and you will be able to download a start menu like on the older Windows. I just did and to my amazement it included the original Freecell. Obviously you have to start from scratch, but at least I have it now.
isn’t there a way to get free card games that don’t require windows store or an outlook email account? I don’t like windows store. it elevated itself to admin and demoted me to user, and it’s my computer! I’m old school when it comes to card games.

There’s no way the Windows Store changed you from an admin to a standard user. It would be really nice if it did do that. It’s really the best way to manage your computers. I know that’s what I do. There’s an admin account on each computer, that never gets logged into and is not attached to a Microsoft Account. Then all of the members of my family (including me) sign in with our Microsoft accounts, and as standard users. Even had it setup like that for Vista and 7 (but without the Microsoft Account aspect to it).

I have tried a few web versions but they don’t keep a tally of wins and losses IN A ROW (streaks I think that is called)

I thought copying them from the Windows 7 CD rom was a good idea. So I found it and view it and searched it but I only found 1 exe file and it was nothing to do with games or freecell.
I was thinking of trying to copy them from an xp or 98 cd rom…

I have the hard drive of my xp computer, there is nothing wrong with it, I took the drive out and recycled the computer. so I still have the card games on my old drive. I could probably connect it temporarily and copy them over at some point.
I still have nt xp hard drive, couldn’t I put it in my computer as a slave drive and steal them from the old drive?
Well that sound like a good plan although a fair bit of trouble. My desktop is Windows 7 and freecell is on it but I can’t find the exe file for it. It’s a great game the way it is and I would hate to think that as future versions of Windows come out it will be lost forever
I don’t know what is meant by Windows X Box.
the freecell that is part of the Solitaire collection uses xbox connection, so it won’t work without a working internet connection.
Given that the vast majority of my playing is on a bus when I have no connection, I know for a fact that the basic FreeCell game works with no internet connection.
I am really, really disappointed and angry that we have lost the old FreeCell and Hearts. THey were great to play whilst the new ones are ponderous

I agree. This FreeCell sucks, like they all do in the Store selection. The Windows 7 one had the best options and features. why doesn’t Microsoft know a good thing when it has it? things seem to be dumbed down in Windows 8.1. I am beginning to be sorry I didn’t switch to a Mac, especially because the two main reasons I stayed I the world of Windows were for FreeCell and for the excellent Word.

The biggest problem with the store one is that it does not keep a record of how many wins in a row – and that is what I play the game for
The versions available in Win 8 are terrible
We have all been sucked into the vortex, Windows 8 has too much information about your computer and what we are using it for, being retrieved by Microsoft and other software suppliers. Future Operating Systems from MS & Apple will be even worse! (Watch out for Windows 10) I also am a keen Freecell player and started at 1 and continued on! I have my original XP OEM disc and will be keeping an older computer to run it on.
I also would like a Senior App version of windows. Just upgraded to W 10 and now REGRET it;; especially miss the old freecell version. Hope something works to restore that. AARP has the game, but is bad version of it. MAD AT MICROSOFT!!!
l like to find ae Freecell as I have been playing on it since it came out I started with number 1 to number37776 now it will not let me play it
Twice I have lost FreeCell on my iPad 8. No matter what I do it shows a blank screen. Then out of the blue it appears again.
